The Year 2026 Declared the Era of the Amphibian Adventure.

While I found the recent developer-focused presentation was highly engaging, my main revelation was not the intended one: I am certain that 2026 will be the definitive year for frogs in video games.

No fewer than five of the highlighted projects—Frog Sqwad, Stretchmancer, Unshine Arcade, Awaysis, and Big Hops—in some way feature these leaping protagonists. Given that a gathering of frogs is termed an army, it appears they are staking their claim.

From Classic Icons to Modern Mania

Croaking characters are far from new to the gaming landscape. Looking back at titles like Frogger to the iconic froggy chair in Animal Crossing, they have long held a niche presence. But, their prevalence has seemingly surged in recent times.

A quick search for "frog game" on Steam reveals an staggering number of results. Although, some of these are low-budget titles, a significant portion are legitimate amphibian adventures.

Tracking the Tadpole Trend

To quantify this phenomenon, I conducted a thorough analysis into the past five years of hoppy gaming on Steam. My criteria was based on clear indicators, prioritizing games with frogs in the title or featured in screenshots.

The findings paint a clear picture: a consistent increase from less than 20 titles in 2020 to nearly 60 in 2025.

This significant surge prompts the question: what's driving this craze? The creature's rising status in the cultural zeitgeist is also apparent elsewhere, like the popularity of Frog and Toad as beloved characters. But, the wave in gaming appears especially strong.

The Allure of Amphibian Mechanics

Frankly, this is a trend I can fully endorse. Frogs have inherent appealing traits for game developers.

  • Weird Little Guys: They are incredibly easy to be designed as quirky characters that often become a standout feature in any game.
  • Innovative Systems: Their stretchy limbs and sticky tongues lend themselves to a wide array of creative gameplay ideas.

A number of the announced projects directly leverage these traits. Examples include the tongue-swinging in Big Hops and the stretchy arm puzzles of Stretchmancer.

What the Future Holds

So, what is the outlook for 2026? With five frog games publicly revealed before the year has even begun—and the possibility for more—the stage is set for it to be the largest year for amphibian gaming.

Should these games perform well—and traditionally, games from this showcase have a strong track record—we might just be on the verge of a full-blown amphibian entertainment revival.
