The left-arm pacer secured a quartet of wickets in the final innings after going wicketless in the first innings.

South Africa 269 (Tony de Zorzi 104; Noman 6-112) & 183 (Brevis 54; Shaheen 4-33, Noman Ali 4-79)

Pakistan won by 93 runs

The national team terminated the reigning champions the Proteas' unbeaten run by completing a 93-run margin victory in an exciting and closely contested first Test in Lahore.

South Africa, who had a 10-match winning streak in Test cricket culminated in a win against Australia in the WTC final in the month of June, were bowled out for 183 chasing 277.

Having resumed on 51 for two, they lost first-innings centurion De Zorzi leg before wicket to pace bowler Afridi to the third ball of the day to shift the tightly balanced chase in the home team's favour.

Left-arm spinner Noman, who claimed 10 wickets for 191 runs in the game, removed Tristan Stubbs for two and clean bowled Brevis, who put up a fight with a rapid 54.

Right-arm spinner Sajid Khan also took advantage of significant spin to terminate opening batsman Rickelton's stay - he lasted 145 balls for 45 - and Shaheen came back in the afternoon session to dismiss the lower order with a fine display of reverse-swing bowling.

He had Kyle Verreynne leg before for nineteen and dismissed Prenelan Subrayen and Rabada to secure the win.

It was each team's first match of the 2025-2027 Test championship cycle and moves Pakistan straight into second place after table-toppers the Australian team.

The win was built around key performances of 93 by opener Imam and, importantly, all-rounder Salman Agha which boosted them to 378.

From there slow bowlers Noman Ali and Sajid took advantage of helpful home pitches, as they had in their series victory over the English team the previous year, to sustain their lead.

The next and last match begins on 20 October.
