JP Morgan Mandates Fingerprint or Eye Scans for Corporate HQ Entry

The financial institution has told employees moving into its state-of-the-art headquarters in NYC that they must provide their biological identifiers to gain entry the multibillion-dollar structure.

Change from Optional to Required

The investment bank had previously planned for the collection of physical identifiers at its Manhattan skyscraper to be voluntary.

Yet, employees of the biggest American bank who have started operations at the corporate hub since last month have obtained communications stating that biometric entry was now "required".

The Technology Behind Entry

This security method requires personnel to submit their hand geometry to gain access security gates in the main floor instead of scanning their identification cards.

Headquarters Details

The bank's headquarters, which allegedly cost three billion dollars to build, will ultimately serve as a workplace for ten thousand workers once it is entirely staffed later this year.

Protection Reasoning

JP Morgan declined to comment but it is assumed that the use of biological markers for entry is created to make the facility more secure.

Alternative Access Methods

There are exceptions for specific personnel who will continue to have the option to use a traditional pass for admission, although the requirements for who will use more conventional entry methods remains unspecified.

Complementary Digital Tools

Complementing the implementation of physical identifier systems, the bank has also launched the "Work at JPMC" mobile app, which functions as a electronic pass and portal for worker amenities.

The application enables users to coordinate visitor access, use building layouts of the facility and arrange in advance meals from the facility's multiple on-site dining vendors.

Industry-Wide Trends

The deployment of tighter entry controls comes as business organizations, especially those with significant operations in the city, look to increase security following the attack of the top executive of one of the leading healthcare providers in July.

The CEO, the boss of the insurance giant, was fatally shot not far from the bank's location.

Potential Wider Implementation

It is not known if the banking institution aims to deploy the biometric system for employees at its branches in other major financial centres, such as the UK capital.

Broader Workplace Monitoring Trends

The action comes amid discussion over the use of digital tools to observe staff by their employers, including observing office attendance levels.

In recent months, all staff members on hybrid work schedules were told they are required to come back to the physical location five days a week.

Management Commentary

The company's leader, the prominent banker, has described JP Morgan's recently opened skyscraper as a "tangible expression" of the company.

The executive, one of the influential banking figures, recently warned that the probability of the financial markets facing a downturn was far greater than many market participants believed.
